Like many parents, I was excited to sit in the audience and watch her perform. We have had a year of practice. I had my phone ready, tissues nearby just in case I became one of those emotional parents, and was prepared to clap like she had just won a Tony Award. As the play began, I noticed something that stuck with me. While she was doing a great job on stage, she kept looking out into the crowd. Her eyes were scanning the audience, almost like she was searching for someone. - [OCD: How much of what I see on TikTok is true?!](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2026/06/25/ocd-how-much-of-what-i-see-on-tiktok-is-true/) - OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) is so much more than organizing your cookie jar for likes. Yes, you may have seen this on TikTok, where the lady beautifully stacks all of her cookies inside of the glass cookie jar. She then talks about how people say she is ‘OCD’ for stacking her cookies in a strategic pattern. But OCD is way more than excessively organizing or doing something for show. - [More Than a Habit: A Look at Addictive Behaviors and Regaining Hope](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2026/05/29/more-than-a-habit-a-look-at-addictive-behaviors-and-regaining-hope/) - Substance use and certain behaviors become a problem when people use them despite the negative impacts on their lives, experience withdrawal symptoms when they attempt to stop, and the amount of the substance used or times the behavior is engaged increases overtime because the person’s tolerance level adapts. The good news: There are common interventions that can help break the cycle of addiction and restore hope for a thriving future. - [How to Have More Fun with ADHD](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2026/04/22/how-to-have-more-fun-with-adhd/) - It's common for folks with ADHD to have a good idea (or several at one time) but to become overwhelmed before starting the task. The problem is there will always be another task, another deadline, another stressor. That is why it is important to continually engage in self-care tasks to prevent long-term impacts of stress on the mind and body. - [Slayder's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2026/04/05/slayders-story/) - Slayder didn't think he needed counseling, but his wife knew from experience that it could help. After she passed away from cancer, he decided to give it a try. He came to Insight Counseling Centers for grief but discovered there was so much more going on inside of him. Counseling opened a world of possibilities for his life after grief. - [Talking with Your Teen: A Better Way to Connect](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2026/03/06/talking-with-your-teen-a-better-way-to-connect/) - Where there are teenagers, there are parents wondering how to navigate the teen years. How can we be approachable parents who have a platform to speak into our children’s lives? I recommend normalizing difficult emotions, leading with a spirit of curiosity, avoiding assumptions, and validating the underlying emotion. - [It Takes a Village: How to Find Community](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2026/02/05/it-takes-a-village-how-to-find-community/) - Life can be hard to navigate. Thankfully, you don’t have to complete the journey alone. While forming relationships is difficult and takes hard work, living without them can be even harder. Being involved in a community has numerous benefits, not only socially but also for our physical health, mental wellbeing, emotional regulation, and spiritual growth. - [Therapy Group for Parents of Neurodivergent Youth](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2026/01/27/therapy-group-for-parents-of-neurodivergent-youth/) - Supporting Neurodivergent Children & Adolescents is an 8-week therapy group for parents & custodial grandparents of neurodivergent youth, facilitated by Courtney Maze, LPC-MHSP(Temp.). And with that came some goals. My guess is that you had the purest intentions and were motivated to implement change, and life sent you some reality checks. How can you accomplish all these things and still keep time for rest and recovery? Why are your goals and new routines adding to your stress? Let’s get into it! - [Self-Care for the Holidays](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2025/11/21/self-care-for-the-holidays/) - The holidays can be a beautiful time and joyful, but they can also be stressful, emotional, and overwhelming. It's a time full of expectations, busy schedules, family pressures, and, for many, a reminder of experiences and people that we've lost. Today I want to talk about something we all need: mental health and wellness—self-care for the holidays. We'll cover some key areas like setting boundaries, honoring grief, supporting our bodies with sleep and nutrition, spending time outdoors, and grounding ourselves in the present. - [Vesper's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2024/10/17/vespers-story/) - "It was 2020, to say the least, and life was very confusing. I was having way more alone time than I had ever had, really, so I was having a lot of ruminating thoughts that were kind of eating me up. I needed help, but the major reason I decided to find a therapist was due to having a lot of questions attached to my gender, or lack thereof, really, as well as a few other things. Finding out that Insight Counseling has an income-based fee scale was a game changer for me." - [Tiffany's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2023/02/27/tiffanys-story/) - "Before I started counseling, I had a history with depression since childhood, and I had also kind of been in this cycle of having mental breakdowns. I was recently married and had a baby, and so that was really challenging for me. Having a husband and a child, you really can't go into that shell anymore, and I think just the pressure of having that responsibility caused the breakdowns to happen more frequently. So, I decided it's time to get some help, and I looked into counseling and found Insight." - [Tayllor's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2020/12/02/tayllors-story/) - "I am 100% on the therapy and counseling training. I think that anyone can benefit from counseling, no matter what life stage you're in. If you have family issues or if you have issues with transition, I think having someone in your life who you can speak to, someone who's an advocate for you, who is on your team and has your best interest at heart but has zero connection to the people around you, is something that is incredibly special and helpful and healing." - [Mary's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2022/11/07/marys-story/) - "I was 31 when I attempted suicide, twice. I didn't plan it, and I didn't understand what was happening in that moment. I just knew I wanted that pain and that hurt to just stop, to feel some relief and some peace. And thankfully, God sent small interruptions to snap me out of it. And the next morning, I went to work. But it wasn't until I was in a meeting, crying in a corner, that I thought, 'Help is not negotiable.' And within a week, I was working with an incredible therapist who started this recovery process by addressing my nature and my nurture." - [Maggie's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2019/03/04/maggies-story/) - "The nonprofit that I worked for when I moved up here, the program that I was participating in, they actually provided us with an option to go to therapy for a discounted rate, which was seriously an answer to my prayer. Growing up, being in my 20s, it's like for me, I just don't have parents who I can call and say, 'Hey, how do I fix this flat tire on my car? Or do I say yes to this job? Do I go to grad school?' All this stuff just floating around and all these decisions that I felt like I was supposed to know." - [Leslie's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2021/12/09/leslies-story/) - My marriage of 27 years was collapsing. My husband and I could no longer communicate, and a good close friend of mine told me about Insight. I felt really inspired, touched by the Holy Spirit, to give it a try. I felt emotionally paralyzed and very stuck dealing with the problems in our marriage, which led to incredible frustration. Dealing with it on our own only made the situation worse. - [Jordan's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2025/06/20/jordans-story/) - "Boundaries, self-worth, self-esteem... Those were the biggest things for me. I have a really hard time setting boundaries and saying no. I'm a people-pleaser in a big way, and to this day I still have a really hard time with it, but I am better. Ten times better than I was." - [Jake's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2019/11/18/jakes-story/) - "For a lot of my life, my battle was learning how to deal with my own inner demons. When you mix drugs, alcohol, and unhealthy fellowship, you have a really negative cocktail. It was unhealthy relationships, drugs, alcohol, and isolation. What I was lacking was the importance of fellowship." - [Holly's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2019/12/11/hollys-story/) - "I didn't realize until I was in my early 20s the dysfunction of my family and what effect it had on me growing up. Anxiety started to really build, and I began to understand what it was as it was creeping in. It started to affect my relationships with family and friends, as well as my more intimate relationships." - [Chelsea's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2024/08/16/chelseas-story/) - "At the time, I had been looking for a new therapist. I tried doing things on my own for a little bit, which went okay, and then I started really struggling again. I was looking up therapists in the area, and that's when I came across Insight. I thought, 'Okay, this will be good.' I really liked the Christian aspect of the counseling because that helped, being a Christian myself. I know that in the church, there's a lot of stigma about mental health, so it really helped that I was able to talk about that with the therapist." - [Cassie's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2023/10/01/cassies-story/) - "Two years ago, from the outside, my life looked absolutely incredible. But behind it all, I was suffering a lot. All of a sudden, my life shattered in one night. I was being emotionally abused, and I thought that God could help him and save him, and that therapy could save him and help him, and that I could ultimately help this man stop being abusive." - [Carolyn's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2019/11/11/carolyns-story/) - "I've always been a pretty high-stress, high-anxiety person. I feel a lot of pressure to be doing things constantly. There's a lot of demand, and there's not a lot of structure in my life. I felt like I needed help, having some extra outlets to be able to express those frustrations and be able to make them into something constructive." - [Brittany's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2024/12/02/brittanys-story/) - "My life leading up to scheduling my first appointment with Insight Counseling was pretty strained. It was not my first time in counseling—I had been in counseling for maybe two years prior to that, but I wasn't receiving what I needed. I had to take a break from work, consulting, training, and the business as a whole. Everything just had to be put on hold, which caused me a lot of mental distress. I needed help managing all of that." - [Brandy's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2024/07/30/brandys-story/) - "I personally have dealt with a lot of high stress at work and then experienced some changes in my personal life. I was having trouble identifying my emotions, regulating my emotions, and really setting healthy boundaries for myself. I really wasn't sure where to start, but I had two prior positive experiences with counseling, and I thought, you know, that is at least a starting place. That led me to reach back out." - [Bernie's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2019/02/08/bernies-story/) - "I have had a long-standing, very difficult relationship with my daughter. Being codependent, you sort of divide yourself, and I really began to see that I was dividing myself, my time, my thoughts between my daughter and my husband." - [Ashley's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2019/05/03/ashleys-story/) - "Before counseling, I was in a really unhappy place. I had moved to Nashville from Clarksville, so it was a pretty easy move. I was amazed at how downtrodden I became after coming here to Nashville. I developed poor relationships with people and partners. I think it was just one of those times of life where all the weight of what's been going on, up to that point, just came crashing down." - [Katie's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2020/11/17/katies-story/) - "I’d been a single mom for 12 years, and as a single mom, I really put everyone, including my child, first in my life. Without having a significant other to share everyday stress and life challenges, life can kind of weigh on you. I was self-employed and uninsured, and I didn't think that therapy was a luxury that I could afford." - [Denise's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2020/04/01/denises-story/) - "I had been stuck for a few years in some thinking patterns and feeling some regret about certain life choices I had made. Honestly, that poem that talks about 'hope deferred,' oh my gosh, I felt like I was at the bottom of the barrel, just about, with feeling hope, so almost hopeless. I was going day-to-day, you know, still operating, doing what I needed to do, but the light wasn't really on." - [Ariel's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2025/07/01/ariels-story/) - "Despite my background being in psychology, I actually had never gone to counseling. It was one of those things where you know you kind of need it, but you keep putting it off and you keep putting it off. You’re like, 'Oh, well, I’ve got the tools myself,' Right? 'I can do everything myself.'" - [Halle's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2025/08/04/halles-story/) - "I was going through a big life transition. I had just graduated school to be a medical assistant, but I was also still living in a homeless shelter. So I was going through this transition where I didn’t really know what I needed to do, but I knew that something had to change. I knew that once I got into a career, I would have more stability, and I needed tools to be able to handle that and to steward that well." - [Sound Bath + Mental Health Talk in Franklin](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2025/08/06/sound-bath-mental-health-talk-in-franklin/) - Thursday, October 9, 2025 from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm at the Williamson County Public Library. It was manageable, of course, just when I went out, I didn't know my limit. I would always pass my limit. So pretty reckless. My partners were not good partners. And yeah, I didn't really have a relationship with my mom." - [Brandon's Story](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2024/06/24/brandons-story/) - "I had moved, I had just gotten married, and I had just started two new jobs, two part-time jobs. There was just a lot of change in my life in a really short period of time. Working in a church like that, I would kind of consider it very much a helping profession. So, you know, focusing on other people and pouring into people, I was having some stress and anxiety about dealing with that chaos, and I needed a space to kind of speak that and breathe." - [The Ever-Evolving Internet vs Your Child](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2025/05/15/the-ever-evolving-internet-vs-your-child/) - Kids are taking risks online, yet they're scared to take risks socially and academically in the real world. These numbers are devastating not only because of their enormity, but because of the fact that suicide is preventable. I recall this time last year when we were about to say “goodbye” to 2019. Businesses were gearing up with their “2020 Vision” themes, and many people were approaching the new decade with optimism. The transition to motherhood is one that is celebrated for its beauty and awe, but many times it is also a transition fraught with anxiety, depression and even sometimes anger and disappointment. - [Grief & Remembrance](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2022/05/26/grief-remembrance/) - Benjamin Franklin once quipped that, “in this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.” While many Americans spend an entire season worrying about taxes, there are precious few days where we collectively reflect on death. In this post, I would like to begin by giving a very brief history of Memorial Day and then transition into a discussion on grief and the grieving process, of which, days of remembrance like today can play an important role for the bereaved. - [One Step at a Time: Navigating Life’s Twists and Turns](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2022/06/14/one-step-at-a-time-navigating-lifes-twists-and-turns/) - Life is like a labyrinth. If you’ve never walked a labyrinth, it’s an experience I highly recommend. Some might equate “labyrinth” with “maze,” but that is a misconception. A maze is designed with confusing paths and dead ends to trick, deceive, and keep one from finding the way. A labyrinth is quite different. It is not a puzzle meant to make one get lost. It’s a tool that helps us find our way – figuratively and literally. - [4th Annual Journey to Wholeness](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2022/08/30/4th-annual-journey-to-wholeness/) - Join us for our 4th annual Journey to Wholeness event! More than 50 million Americans provide crucial care and medical assistance to parents, children, siblings, or other loved ones. If you are a family caregiver, we want to connect you with information and resources that can help you maintain your mental health and better serve your loved ones. - [This is the most popular 2023 New Year's resolution in Tennessee](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2023/01/06/this-is-the-most-popular-2023-new-years-resolution-in-tennessee/) - Last month, the job search website, Zippia, released results of a survey showing the most popular 2023 New Year’s resolutions, by state. I expected Tennessee’s top resolution to be “stop smoking,” “lose weight,” or “exercise more.” I was pleasantly surprised to see that along with 11 other states, Tennessee’s top resolution for 2023 is “therapy.” - [Free Training: Exploring Mental Fitness](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/2023/02/02/free-training-exploring-mental-fitness/) - Did you know everyone has an inner judge? Parents deal with a variety of struggles, from normal life transitions of one phase of childhood to another to behavioral and emotional difficulties. Parents often also struggle with their own anxiety about being good enough, feeling inadequate for the role. Find a counselor – - [children and adolescents](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/children-and-adolescents/) - As children and teens develop and grow, inherent phases and difficulties arise. Although typical, these phases can be extremely difficult. Counseling with children and adolescents looks different from counseling with adults — it is geared for them and completely crafted to assist them where they are, developmentally. We use various techniques to make children feel at ease in the session, and we aim to explore their emotions in ways they can understand and express what they are feeling. Regardless of the source or intensity, many of our counselors have specialized training to assist with trauma and its residual effects in trauma survivors. Find a counselor – - [self-image issues](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/self-image-issues/) - How we see ourselves affects the way we see and interact with others in our work, family, school, and community. Self-image issues can look like having too high or too low of an evaluation of yourself. Many people struggle with the feeling of not being good enough, and often times these people feel that others regularly take advantage of them, or they feel that they do not deserve to succeed. We believe that each person is created with gifts and abilities, and while none of us is perfect, we need to understand ourselves as gifted and loved. Find a counselor – - [spiritual issues](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/spiritual-issues/) - Spiritual questions are the questions of ultimate concern in our lives. They touch not just on our understanding or questions about God, but on issues of sin, grace, forgiveness, community and belonging. Almost all issues that bring people to counseling have some spiritual aspect. At Insight Counseling Centers, we are committed to helping each client deal with spiritual issues, when they arise, in a way that is comfortable to them. We welcome people from all faiths and faith communities, including those with no faith or faith community. Our goal is to help our clients answer the deeper questions of life in ways that are meaningful to them. If you have questions or concerns about how we may deal with your faith in counseling, feel free to call us before making an appointment to talk about your situation. Find a counselor – - [stress](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/stress/) - Modern life is full of activities and demands that keep us running from morning until night. You may feel like you can never get everything done and that there are too many demands on your time. Stress can also come from our own worries and internal demands on ourselves. Having too much stress can result in sleep difficulties, health problems, irritability, and relationship problems. Setting appropriate boundaries and maintaining good self-care are two of the most important skills we can learn. Our counselors can help evaluate the sources of stress, internal and external, and assist you in developing a plan to help you feel more in control and peaceful. Find a counselor – - [sexual problems](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/sexual-problems/) - We are often led to believe that good sex is a natural part of a good relationship, but too often we are too ashamed to talk about our sexual desires, disappointments, or difficulties. Whether you want to deal with issues individually or as a couple, our counselors offer sex therapy or relationship counseling related to sexual issues to help you discover the joy of healthy sexual relationships. After a minimum of four sessions, we are happy to provide couples with the state certificate of completion of premarital counseling for the marriage license. Insight Counseling Centers provides mental, emotional, and spiritual support for people experiencing chronic health concerns and for their loved ones. - [life transitions](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/life-transitions/) - Robert Frost once said, “The best way out is always through.” This is so true about life’s transitions. The only way to grow in life’s transitions is to move through them. Change is a fact of life. Transitions force us to make a move or a decision. They force us to flex muscles we may never have known we had and to move on to something new and different. However, we must work and maneuver our way through what may seem like negative and fearful times before coming out to a positive outcome on the other side. Counselors at Insight can help you overcome fear and make the best out of the changing situations in your life. Find a counselor – - [spiritual abuse and religious trauma](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/religious-trauma/) - Religious trauma, or spiritual trauma, is the result of wounds caused by spiritual abuse. We can identify spiritual abuse by the use of coercion, control, disempowerment, or distortion of authority in the context of a faith community, whether it’s done by leadership, peers, family, or teachings. If you think you may be experiencing trauma from something that happened in your church or faith community, our counselors have special training to help you identify spiritual harm, heal from old wounds, and rediscover your goodness and strengths. Please note: Many of our offices are located inside church buildings in space donated by local congregations, particularly Christian denominations. If you are not comfortable receiving therapy in a particular location, please let our Intake Department or your therapist know, and we will present alternative options. Find a counselor – - [neurodivergent](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-tag/neurodivergent/) - Autism and ADHD aren’t mental health diagnoses, but they shape how a person experiences the world. Whether you’re exploring if neurodiversity matches your experience or seeking to understand what a new diagnosis means for your life, we’re here to support you. Our therapists help you navigate the world as a neurodivergent person. This looks like working through social challenges, creating strategies, tools, and routines to help your emotional regulation and executive functioning, and attending to sensory issues. We also offer support to parents of children who are neurodivergent or diagnosed with Autism or ADHD. ## Staff Categories - [Administrative Staff](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/administrative-staff/) - [Counselors](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/counselors/) - [Brentwood](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/brentwood/) - [Franklin](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/franklin/) - [Murfreesboro](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/murfreesboro/) - [Clarksville](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/clarksville/) - [Nashville](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/nashville/) - [Donelson](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/donelson/) - [Supervisors](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/supervisors/) - [Services in Spanish](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/services-in-spanish/) - [Telehealth](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/telehealth/) - [Clinical Admin](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/clinical-admin/) - [Cookeville](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/cookeville/) - [Cheatham County](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/cheatham-county/) - [Addiction Recovery](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/addiction-recovery/) - [Anxiety](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/anxiety/) - [Children & Adolescents](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/children-adolescents/) - [Depression](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/depression/) - [Gender & Sexuality](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/gender-sexuality/) - [Grief & Loss](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/grief-loss/) - [Life Transitions](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/life-transitions/) - [Parenting](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/parenting/) - [PTSD](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/ptsd/) - [Premarital Counseling](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/premarital-counseling/) - [Relationship Issues](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/relationship-issues/) - [Self-image Issues](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/self-image-issues/) - [Sexual Problems](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/sexual-problems/) - [Spanish](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/spanish/) - [Spiritual Issues](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/spiritual-issues/) - [Spiritual Abuse & Religious Trauma](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/spiritual-abuse-religious-trauma/) - [Stress](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/stress/) - [Trauma](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/trauma/) - [Counseling for Older Adults](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/counseling-for-older-adults/) - [Internship Supervisors](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/internship-supervisors/) - [Neurodivergent](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/neurodivergent/) - [Chronic Health Concerns](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/staff-category/chronic-health-concerns/) ## Testimonials Categories - [Clients](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/testimonials-category/clients/) ## Event Categories - [Workshop](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/events/category/workshop/) - [Fundraiser](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/events/category/fundraiser/) - [Training](https://insightcounselingcenters.org/events/category/training/)
