The word empowerment can mean many things to people. To me it means the sense that we have that our lives are working for us. Empowering ourselves mentally means:
—that we feel the capacity to engage the world again
—that feeling that we can come out of the fear, melancholy, and brokenness that may have knocked us down
—that we feel good in our own skins again.
Life events can rob us of that feeling. It can rob our relationships and leave us feeling unsure…unsafe. To me, the counseling relationship is a collaborative process of finding that sense of empowerment that you were born with..and that you still have within. I firmly believe that we are creatures made uniquely to self-heal.
We do it when we skin our knees and new skin is created. We do it when we recover from illnesses and new immunity is developed, and we do it when life knocks us down with trauma, brokenness, and anxiety-inducing challenges. Sometimes we just need that someone to come alongside us and help us access the body’s own healing systems. None of us does it alone. We’ve all experienced that feeling that we don’t quite fit in or we don’t know how to get out of the hole that we find ourselves in. We have all felt the need to have someone help point the way out of the darkness. You and I can do that together!
As for who I am, I have been married 29 years and have four adult children. My husband and I served in pastoral ministry for twenty years when I decided to enter the dangerous realm of adolescent academics. I taught high school math for ten years and then went on to work with domestic violence crisis intervention for almost five years. Now that my “little ones” are now all over six feet, I spend my time playing with my maltipoo, Sophie, and visiting other cities, places, and worlds through the power of reading.
