Oct. 5: Insight Counseling Centers offers a conference on healing faith-based hurt
Insight Counseling Centers is presenting Restoration Experience, a free 90-minute conference taking place on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019 at 7:30 pm at The Well Coffeehouse in Brentwood. The aim of the event is to acknowledge that hurt and isolation sometimes occur in faith communities, and to give people much-needed resources for moving forward.
Spiritual wounds are real, and unfortunately, common. They range from religious abuse perpetrated by leadership to social rejection by fellow community members.
“Faith communities are where people go to discover a deeper purpose and meaning for their lives. When something happens in that context, like sexual misconduct by a leader, shaming for expressing our sexuality, or exclusion for having a mental illness, it can be world-shattering. What can we do for ourselves to heal from these types of wounds, and how can we, as a community, be safer for each other?” said Abbie Culbertson, Insight’s Director of Marketing & Communications.
The event features presentations from three professionally trained therapists who have special experience integrating clients’ spirituality and faith traditions into psychotherapy. Their unique approach allows them to understand the issue of faith-based hurt from a psychological perspective as well as a theological perspective.
“As social creatures, we crave and need community. We can be harmed by others, we can cause harm, and we can help heal. Our message is to help heal,” Culbertson added.
Restoration Experience is free and open to all. Space is limited. Your RSVP ahead of time will ensure entry to the event.
