Finding Wholeness after Faith-based Fracture

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2019 | THE WELL COFFEEHOUSE, BRENTWOOD, TENN.

The Talks

The Unintended Effects of Purity CultureHannah Feliciano, MMFT

During the 1990’s and 2000’s the Purity Movement took hold in many Christian churches around the country, establishing an expectation for young people to not engage in pre-marital sex. Many of the messages of the movement were shaming and hurtful, and today many young adults carry the effects. The question we are asking now is, “How do we learn from this and do better?”

The Burden of ShameCarol Smith, M.Div., LMFT

Many parents know the experience of being embarrassed by their children in public, and (heaven forbid), in church! Shame is a heavy burden. Chronic experiences of shame can challenge our structures of faith — individually, in families, and in faith communities.

Carol Smith is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and serves as Insight Counseling Centers’ director of clinical services and training.

Restored to MeMonét Shell, MMFT

We are our most peaceful selves when we are confident in who we are. Our spirituality allows us to find identity in God, but what happens when the hurt that we’ve experienced in a faith community causes us to lose so many parts of ourselves that our identity is lost? Let’s talk about what it looks like to be restored.

SONG TO MY SEXUALITY
Written, sung, ukulele’d by Erin Rose Tillson | Harmonies by Hannah Feliciano | Recorded and mixed by Joshua Mendez

My momma taught me to keep you safe
A little demon had to lock away
I was ashamed of you
Afraid of losing you
I think it’s time we set the score straight

IT’S NOT YOU VERSUS ME NOW
WE’RE ON THE SAME TEAM
WE’RE ON THE SAME TEAM
LET’S PLAY NICE TOGETHER NOW

I’M CHEERING FOR US NOW
WE’RE ON THE SAME TEAM
WE’RE ON THE SAME TEAM
LET’S PLAY NICE TOGETHER NOW

Now I’m unlearning what mom taught
Finally listening to what you want
I never dreamed that you
Could have dreams, too
Now this is pretty good what we’ve got

To my surprise I’m finding
Freeing you has not destroyed me
To my delight I’m finding
Freeing you is freeing me
Freeing you is freeing me
